2021 Southern Transcon Day 6: Winslow AZ

General Crook Trail

I-17 : 1975 Breakdown Site

We rolled out of Cottonwood and headed to the I-17 for a few miles of freeway riding. We rode along the same spot where my 1970 Mercury Montego Station wagon broke down when we moved from Detroit to Scottsdale in August 1975!

Quiet morning in Camp Verde

We exited on Middle Verde Road and passed the Cliff Castle Casino before rolling through beautiful farms and historic Camp Verde. After making a quick stop we headed to the first SAG at the bottom of the start of the General Crook trail.

Lots of these huge grasshoppers on the road!
SAG at top of climb

After several hours of climbing (about 25 miles) we finally arrived at the lunch SAG just over the summit of the climb. The crew was whipping up grilled cheese sandwiches, and they were awesome! It would have been nice to linger, but we still have 40 miles to go!

Road to Winslow
Nice tailwind and slight down hill helped move us along at 25-35 miles an hour. The heat increased during the descent, but it was no problem!

We rolled onto Historic Route 66 and made a 1 block detour to visit the 'Standin on the Corner' monument. After a huge Harley club finished their photos, one of the bikers took our picture!

It was another good day, 115 miles, 7400 feet of climbing, in 10 hours. Tomorrow we  climb back into the mountains and our last stop in Arizona; Springerville. See you then.
