2021 Southern Transcon Day 14: Weatherford OK

Original Route 66 pavement

Welcome to OK
We rolled out at 7:30 and headed out in heavy crosswinds. Today the ride will follow the Mother Road, US Route 66, including several stops at museums and other sites along the way. 15 miles into the ride we crossed into Oklahoma. No welcome sign, but we asked this State Trooper if we could photograph his cruiser. He said sure, but he added that we was not a State Trooper. Look carefully at the logo, he is an officer for the Oklahoma Corporation Commission. Good thing we got out annual report filed on time!

More beautiful horses!
We continued on Old Route 66 through rolling farms and fields. The winds were strong, 18-24 mph out of the north and gusting to 30-40 mph for the entire ride. After several days of great tail winds and super weather, it was payback time, and that's all we'll say about that!
100th Meridian Museum

Roger Miller Tribute Mural
Our first stop on Lon's Route 66 tour was the 100th Meridian Museum in Erick OK. The Museum was not open, but we took a look through the windows! We also learned that Roger Miller is an Erick OK native son.

The first SAG was set up in a spot where we could walk our bike onto a closed section of the original Route 66 road surface. Here are a few seconds of video riding on the Mother Road Route 66. We rode several miles on the 100 year old surface, which was in remarkably great shape, and better than many of the roads we have ridden that are still in service!

Spectacular ranches

North Fork of the Red River
Beckham County Courthouse

We crossed the North Fork of the Red River and continued into Sayre OK. We took a short detour to visit the Beckham County Courthouse. It had a cameo role in the Grapes of Wrath movie!

Cool old bridge on Route 66
National Route 66 Museum

Outdoor displays at the Museum

Our next sag was set up at the National Route 66 Museum. The PacTour folks picked up the admission fees and we took 30 minutes to view a short film about Route 66 and tour the grounds of the museum.

Officially halfway through the tour!
We had another great lunch SAG at a KOA campground, and celebrated completing the first half of our tour!

Back on old Route 66 (I-40 Frontage Road)
Another Route 66 Oddity

Route 66 Museum in Clinton OK
Diner Display
After lunch we continued eastward to Clinton OK for our last SAG stop of the day and to visit another Route 66 museum. It was a great visit and soon we were on the final run to Weatherford to complete the day.

They build windmills where its windy!

Lucilles Roadhouse

We arrived at the hotel in Weatherford OK, at 5:30. 110 miles, two museums, and a ton of wind. Glad to be done with this stage!

We had dinner at Lucilles Roadhouse (replica located next to our hotel) to cap off our day. Tomorrow we head south and leave the Mother Road and head southeast toward Purcell OK!

Same drill, 7:30 in the parking lot, but it will be in the 50's, so bundle up!
