2021 Southern Transcon Day 7: Springerville AZ

Sunrise over I-40
A beautiful morning for a ride! We headed out of Winslow and jumped on the I-40 for about 12 miles.

I-40 Paceline
The surface was smooth and clear and we settled into a nice warm-up pace. We picked up a few riders and our train grew as we headed east.

More wildlife on the route!

We jumped on to a old Route 66 section with a tourist 'attraction' on the side of the road! The old Route 66 section was in terrible shape, we suffered through more than a few miles until reaching Joseph City and getting on new roads!

Welcome to Holbrook

We skirted the south side of Holbrook, but went right by the welcome structure featuring Petrified Wood! We pressed on with a building tailwind as we covered the next 20 miles to the Petrified Forest National Park.

Solid rock stump

The next SAG was just outside the park entrance. We topped off bottles and Jeff and I were out in short order.

Lots of this today

We covered 120 miles on the ride today, and most of it was in wide open country. We had a steady crossing tailwind most of the day.

Jeff and I focused on quick SAG stops and holding a steady recovery pace.  We made great progress.

Typical long rollers
There was 4000 feet of climbing, but no single climb was longer than 1.5 miles. With the tailwind we could pedal at a steady pace, building speed, and soft pedal up the uphills. Lot's of 'free' climbing today.
Lyman Lake and State Park
Nice downhill into Springerville
More livestock in town

We rolled into town 9 hours and 15 minutes, covering 120 miles and 4000 feet of climbing. We were thankful for the tailwind blessing that helped carry the day. Check-in, clean bike-body-clothes and look for food.
Highly rated on Yelp!

Our bartender, waitress, and bouncer!

Its a 1911 45ACP in a custom holster if your wondering. The sign out front of the bar said: "No Fighting Problem Customers will be Asked to Leave"

We had a great meal and were on our best behavior!!!

Tomorrow is one of the longest days of the tour, 150 miles, plus we change time zones and lose an hour.  We may do a double update in a couple days!

Thanks for following along!
