2021 Southern Transcontinental - Day 0 San Diego

Dog Beach, San Diego California
I signed up for the 2020 Southern Transcontinental tour, but like many other events last year, Covid made them 2021 events! The tour is organized by PacTours (Pacific Atlantic cycling tours). This is their 100th cross-country tour and includes 22 riders/ 8 crew, 28 days, 2900 miles and 103,800 feet of climbing. This isn't an ice cream and cookies tour, we will average 100+ miles and 4,000 feet of climbing per day. The 'rest days' are a few relatively flat days along the way. We plan to arrive at Tybee Island, Georgia on Monday October 4!

Route Map and Daily message board

Easy ride on Mission Beach
Here we go! Today started with a shake down ride to Dog Beach, dip the wheels in the Pacific, and head to Mission Beach for coffee and a light breakfast, then back to the hotel.

Our favorite Gelato shop
Deb and I went to LaJolla Shores for a great lunch at the Cheese Shop. Then onto the Cove to grab a Gelato at Bobboi. We think it the best gelato outside of Florence Italy!

Lon Haldeman gives leads the rider meeting
Back at the hotel, we completed the check-in and attended the rider meeting. Group dinner tonight, then tomorrow morning...we ride!

All my stuff for the next month!

That’s fantastic Steve. A transcontinental bike ride was on my “bucket list” for years. Good luck, will be thinking about you…
